Minnie Cannon School Still Stands After Fire

Dear Minnie Cannon Families,

While at this time it appears that our school was spared,  I am sending my love and best wishes your way in hopes that your family is safe and your home is intact. As we drove away from our home on Cobb, not knowing whether we would have anything to return to, it made me focus more than ever on the important things in life. Driving away with my children and husband close was all that mattered. My heart breaks for those of you who have lost your homes and more. When you get an opportunity, please send me an email or message indicating how you are, what you need, and what we can do for you. I don't know when school will resume, but as soon as I find out I will get the word out on this website and as many ways that I can think of to communicate. If you think you will be able to return to school when it reopens, I would love to hear that as well. Stay safe, and I can't wait until I can see all of you once again at our precious little school.

Sincerely,
Shelley Tan, Principal

Special Christmas in Middletown Event

posted Dec 8, 2015, 12:16 PM by Shelley Tan2

Good Evening!

I hope this message finds you well.

On behalf of the hardworking team with the Valley Fire Relief Fund –The Press Democrat, Redwood Credit Union and our Senate Office – we would like to invite you to a very special event, Christmas in Middletown.

This holiday event, a partnership with the Middletown Area Merchants Association, will be kicking off at noon on Saturday, Dec. 12 with a celebration of community and free pasta lunch for all Middletown and South Lake County residents. The lunch will be hosted at the Fire Protection District’s Middletown Station, 21095 Highway 175.

Santa will be at the lunch giving out gift certificates to the kids from Middletown merchants, a holiday prize drawing will be taking place and neighborhood heroes will be honored for their unwavering commitment to the South Lake County community during the Valley Fire crisis and the continued recovery efforts.

In addition, we’ll be presenting an $800,000 check that will be donated to over 1,000 residents who lost their homes to the Valley Fire. Nearly $1 million has previously been distributed to hundreds of South Lake County school kids, residents, emergency responders and local farmers and ranchers from the Valley Fire Relief Fund.

And then that evening, all Middletown area businesses will be open late for shopping, dining and Christmas cheer. Santa will arrive at the new Middletown Park in front of the Senior Center on a fire truck at 5:30 p.m.

To RSVP for the lunch, contact Karlene Rebich at Karlene.Rebich@sen.ca.gov or by calling (707) 576-2771.

Thank you for considering this invitation. We really hope you can join us on Saturday, December 12 at noon!

Warmest Regards,

Community Member to Donate Resources to Community Fire Victims

posted Sep 21, 2015, 6:35 AM by Shelley Tan2

Dear Families,
Please see letter below and send me a list of needed items that I may pass on to Mrs. Butler. Thank you.
---------------------------
Dear Ms, Tan,
I spent many summers at Anderson Springs growing up and fell in love with area and want to help. So many in our community have donated clothes, etc so I decided to set up a wish list for the Middletown Unified School District to get new school supplies for your students and teachers. I want them to feel supported and cared for when they return to school.
The wish list is called Valley Fire Children's Fund. Items purchased off the list will be shipped to my home in Santa Rosa and I will contact the school district office to deliver them. I want to get as much as possible for your schools! Please forward this to all your co-workers, friends and family and ask them to help make your school strong again,
Thank you,
Maureen Butler

Message from Superintendent Stone

posted Sep 18, 2015, 10:11 AM by Shelley Tan2

Dear Middletown USD families,

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you as we begin, as a community, to recover from this terrible event.  I want you to know that we are working very hard to have the schools ready as soon as possible so that we are ready for your children whenever we are allowed to return home.  We think we may be able to open at the end of next week, or on Monday of the following week.

There is a lot of smoke, ash, and soot in some of our campuses, and this needs to be cleaned out (by wiping everything in the rooms and HEPA vacuuming) and then the air purified.  All of the food in our refrigerators and freezers has spoiled and needs to be removed and replaced. This work begins with a large team from ATI coming in on Saturday. They are hoping to be done by Wednesday, but it depends on what they run into.  I walked all the campuses with them on Tuesday, and we did a very thorough assessment, but it is always possible we missed something.

The Minnie Cannon, Coyote Valley, and Middle School campuses came through the fires without much smoke impact.  The high school/ag program was impacted more, and Cobb School the most. The large rooms seemed to fare the worst and will need extensive cleaning:  HS and MS gym, Coyote Valley and Cobb multipurpose rooms.

The Loconoma classroom and our maintenance facility burned.  We will be replacing both and plan to move the Loconoma program over to another classroom until their building is replaced.

As you can guess, Cobb School has a huge amount of smoke, soot, and ash infiltration.  This leaves the air unhealthy to breathe in the schoolrooms.  Because of the way the school was built with those lovely peaked roofs, the smoke and soot are very concentrated in the attics.  The team is going to need to access these areas to get it all cleaned out.  They’re also going to need to replace a lot of ceiling tiles, clean all carpets, wipe down every single thing in every single room, and then run air purifiers for some days.  It may take two months to get that campus ready for the staff and kids again. We are developing plans to bring the Cobb kids and their teachers into town until Cobb reopens.  Our goal is to keep everyone together.

We are also working on getting our sewers and wells back online district wide.  Our school buses seem to be fine.  They get checked out today.  ATT has placed an emergency communication satellite and generator on the Cobb field.  This will be there until the ATT lines are repaired so that the community has 911 access.

A number of our teachers, staff members, and principals have lost their homes, as have so many of our families.  We know that some families will need to stay elsewhere for awhile.  Anyone in that situation has the right to enroll their student(s) in the local schools until they can return.  We are also trying to figure out a way to provide bus service into the district for those of you who are staying in Clearlake and Kelseyville and areas nearby and want your children to continue to attend our schools.

Middletown USD families, we are here to teach and support your children in every way we can.  We are very anxious to get things back to normal for all of our students and know that you, our community, feels the same way.  We will have teams of counselors and mental health professionals on campuses to help us transition the children back into school and deal with the trauma of the Valley Fire. There are going to be some bumps in the road, and we hope you’ll be patient with us as we deal with them.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to e-mail me.  As long as I can keep my devices charged up, I will respond.

Love to you all,

Catherine Stone
